Black-throated Gray Warbler at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge

My family and I spent last week in Cape Cod, enjoying a last summer getaway in a summer where getaway options have been extremely limited for obvious reasons. Lo-and-behold, Robin Taubman had posted images of a Black-throated Gray Warbler at Jamaica Bay! as well as the bird. It was a great 326th bird for Queens.

Shorebirds on the East Pond of Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge

If I had my druthers I would be birding the East Pond of Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge pretty much every day from July until September. Can you tell which of the birds in the two photos above is the Long-billed Dowitcher ? If you can’t figure it out you have to turn your binoculars in and give up birding.

Great July Birding in Queens

Not only that, but the birding is typically not great either. But this July has been magnificent for birds in Queens. Small numbers of common shorebirds were pleasant, a Gull-billed Tern was appreciated, a variety of waterfowl was worth looking through, but I hadn’t seen a single year bird. What’s going on?
