Jumping out of my “Beat” today

Let me start off with being quite clear, there are no grizzly Bears on the Baja! All of which, was for one a one day shoot with the famed bears, as they dined on the fall salmon run. In addition to the Grizzly Bears , I was able to photograph Woodland Buffalo , squirrels, deer, Red Fox , and even a herd of Yaks. Savanah Sparrow.

Bright and Brighter

Backlighting showed off the rusty crown of this Rusty-crowned Ground-Sparrow. Oddly enough, it is the Western Bluebird that bears the taxonomic name of Sialia mexicana ; but in my experience, the Eastern Bluebird ( Sialia sialia ) is much more common in most of Mexico. Eastern Bluebirds seemed to be everywhere.

Monterrey Meetings

Work brings me regularly to Monterrey in Nuevo Leon, northern Mexico. That day, he limited himself to showing us Buff-bellied Hummingbird, Golden-olive Woodpecker, Sulphur-bellied Flycatcher, Rose-throated Becard, Grey-collared Becard, Spot-breasted Wren, Olive Sparrow, Hepatic Tanager, Blue Bunting and Stripe-crowned Warbler.

I moved to Mexico in 1983 (and really should update my bio below). Migratory Lark Sparrows were everywhere. Angie, now my wife, moved here in 1985, and we married here two years later. So our now-adult children have never lived in the U.S. But they have embraced some American customs, and one of their favorites is Thanksgiving.

My Subtropical Bird Garden

And while Dogwoods and Eastern Redbuds may be great options in Massachusetts, they won’t grow for me in Morelia, Mexico. Also, my all-too-abundant House Sparrows have learned to pull thin, flexible strips off of my bananas’ leaves, which they use to weave their nests. Unfortunately, they are all House Sparrows.
