In the most of Europe, Brown Bear is a mythical creature that lives only in mediaeval tapestries and folk tales. In the European Union there are only 10,000 mature bears (source: IUCN). Not much further, on the new tarmac that ends 6 km before the Gramos village, we find muddy bear footprints crossing the road.

It was an exciting experience, though a remarkably chilly one, as winters in Castile and León can be very cold. At the time we were looking, without success, for White-backed Woodpeckers. I’ve also sat for hours in unabated hides in Bulgaria where it’s a matter of luck whether you see a bear or not. in the evening.

Acorn Woodpecker and Black-crested Titmouse were plentiful and confiding. Amazingly, everyone showed up at dawn except for one person, who’d had a near-death experience with me on Colombia’s Sumapaz paramo, an acceptable excuse for a no-show. We finally reached Mesa de Oso , the table (mountain) of the bear. It was amazing.

I don’t really know – from my own experience with school bullies or from Jack London’s novels? At some stage, a salmon-hunting bear at a shingle beach came too close, mere 9 steps. Now, you should know Lucky, he’s no taller than my wife, who is of average height for a woman, and that bear was at least 4-5 times heavier than him.

Every other year or so, we experience the lightest of frosts, nothing killing, and our warmest temperatures (in the 80s and 90s) occur in late spring. Golden-fronted Woodpeckers apparently like blackberries, too. This year, that pair of Golden-fronted Woodpeckers are big customers as well. One of our birdiest plants.

Such meditative birding is, for me, the heart of the experience. Yet it was the guy in the kayak, a UM ornithologist, who spotted the Lewis’s Woodpeckers. Unlike what you may have read, real rivers bear us ceaselessly into the future. It relieves stress, helps me make decisions, and leaves me feeling refreshed.
