In the most of Europe, Brown Bear is a mythical creature that lives only in mediaeval tapestries and folk tales. In the European Union there are only 10,000 mature bears (source: IUCN). Not much further, on the new tarmac that ends 6 km before the Gramos village, we find muddy bear footprints crossing the road.

I’ve tackled Texas, collected in California, fooled around in Florida. As we headed down the trail, we were stopped from taking the long route by yellow tape and a sign warning of bears. ” A mid-sized Grizzly Bear was slowly making its way along the opposite bank of the river. What an incredible experience.

Every other year or so, we experience the lightest of frosts, nothing killing, and our warmest temperatures (in the 80s and 90s) occur in late spring. And it bears for more than half the year! Mine are mostly cutting-collected natives. My climate is very wet in the summer, and bone-dry in the winter. And nothing more.

You know the captain’s name already: the Ross’s Gull was named after Ross who collected the type specimen in 1823 on Melville Peninsula in the Canadian Arctic. Curiously, in 1831, McCormick was appointed a surgeon on HMS Beagle under the command of Captain FitzRoy and he expected to put together a sizeable natural history collection.
