Other species I was looking forward to as possibilities included Anhingas , Magnificent Frigatebirds , and seeing as the sun was supposed to shine, some raptors soaring. Howler monkeys! My first-ever wild monkeys! Monkeys!!!!! Golden-mantled Howlers !

The animals aren’t quite so closely packed as Hollywood can manage, and they tend towards slightly smaller species, in general, but still, its impressive. At nighttime this allowed some impromptu spotlighting, and we found many spiders, insects, bats as well as a Lesser Mousedeer and a sleeping Malaysian Flycatcher.

Birds with white on them are much more likely to take the form of goodies like the Snowy Cotinga , or two species of tityras. The Caribbean slope of Costa Rica also differs from the islands in having a lot more bird species. The Bat Falcon that joined us for breakfast. . I recommend staying there but what about the birds?

Sometimes in a forest you’d be forgiven for thinking there was nothing but birds, monkeys and squirrels (and mosquitos, obviously), and then at night you start seeing civets, wallabies, and tarantulas. We found some more sleeping birds, lots of frogs, and a Lesser Mousedeer – a new species for me! So many insects.

Along that stretch, we enjoyed Fork-tailed Flycatchers and other species in the open fields and marshes including Harriss’s Hawk , the local Nicaraguan Seed-Finch , and, best of all, a pair of normally sneaky and secretive Yellow-breasted Crakes walking in the open through a grassy marsh!

He quickly starts pointing our different species that are all around us, with exceptional and obvious knowledge. The house we were staying in was surrounded by Howler Monkeys all night, who really work as a great 5:30 alarm, if that happens to be the time you want to get up! Costa Rica species – 273.
