Kinabatangan – Borneo’s Mighty River

At nighttime this allowed some impromptu spotlighting, and we found many spiders, insects, bats as well as a Lesser Mousedeer and a sleeping Malaysian Flycatcher. Can’t do a post on Kinabatangan without the amazing Bornean endemic Probosis Monkey. A side tributary. The birding was pretty ace too.

Pulling Birds at Panti Forest in Malaysia

Plus, I saw awesome bats, bugs, butterflies, herps, pitcher plants, and four of the five possible monkey species: Dusky Leaf Monkey , Banded Leaf Monkey , Southern Pig-tailed Macaque , and Long-tailed Macaque. Bats under a rocky overhang. All in all, a memorable Malaysian experience.

Caribbean Lowland Birding at Ara Ambigua Lodge, Costa Rica

On our first morning, we actually ended up with over 90 species in a couple of hours right around the rooms of the hotel, best ones being Green Ibis (common at the hotel ponds), Bat Falcon , Cinnamon and Rufous-winged Woodpeckers , Fasciated Antshrike , Plain-colored Tanager , Crimson-collared Tanager , and Black-headed Tody-Flycatcher.

Sometimes in a forest you’d be forgiven for thinking there was nothing but birds, monkeys and squirrels (and mosquitos, obviously), and then at night you start seeing civets, wallabies, and tarantulas. Best of all the lodge also set out a large white board with lights on, which attracted lots of insects and in turn bats.
