In 2022, the 10,000 Birds eBird Collaborative submitted 1,837 checklists from 9 countries ( Australia , China , Costa Rica , Mexico , Saint Lucia , Serbia , Trinidad and Tobago , United Kingdom , and the United States ) and observed 1,273 species. The Collaborative life list increased to 4,140.

During the third quarter of 2022 (July, August, and September), the Collaborative submitted 212 checklists from 3 countries ( Australia , Costa Rica , Mexico , and the United States ). 4,126: Cook’s Petrel (California, US). July: 81 checklists and 318 species. August: 54 checklists and 195 species.

Victoria’s Riflebird, a Bird-of-paradise

Four members of the family are found in Australia, and while two of these are in the no less inaccessible cape York region, two species of riflebird range as far south on the coast of Australia as just north of Sydney. I never got a shot of a male Victoria’s Riflebird ( Ptilotis victoriae ), so here is one by David Cook (CC).

Petrel Paradise

The first to cruise past in a hurry were the stunning Cook’s Petrels. The final large petrel species is another gadfly petrel, albeit a much larger one than the Cook’s Petrel. One birder from Australia even got his lifer Red-crowned Parakeet !

And in 2015- 2016, they travelled the entire continent of Australia birding and writing about it. Now, that’s a rarity.
