In a recent post, Corey listed five things to do when it is too cold to go birding and one of those things is planning birding travel. Here in Portland, Oregon, it is more frequently too rainy rather than too cold to go birding, at least comfortably. Thus, my “good birds” are likely the opposite of an eastern birder.

Most of the time, I know enough about an area, or have done some research into what is found there, that I am pleasantly surprised at best. Nearly 30,000 of these acres is set aside as dry wilderness habitat for other birds, animals and other various living creatures. There was also a small raft of Ruddy Ducks.

The Ferruginous Hawk ( Buteo regalis ) is truly a regal bird. Obviously more research needs to be done on this magnificent raptor. The two most prolific contributors, Pat and Tom, have been sharing their birding space in Costa Rica. The beats have now contributed more checklists than birds. During October, 7 countries (Costa Rica, Australia, USA, India, Hong Kong, UK, Serbia) were birded by 11 beats who shared 135 checklists and noted 697 species.
