When the South Dakota ferret numbers began dropping, they captured nine animals in hopes of starting a captive breeding population. All the wild ferrets by 1974, and all the kits born to the nine captives, and finally the last of the captive animals in 1979. Then, in Meeteese, Wyoming, the Hogg family’s ranch dog Shep found something.

Last week we were in the Teton Valley, getting ready to head over to Wyoming, and Yellowstone National Park. After leaving Yellowstone NP, we drove to Cody, Wyoming wanting to visit the Cody Western Museum, as well as hit a couple of bird sites. Our last night in Wyoming was spent at the historic Terry Bison Ranch.

The Oilbird today lives only in South America, but fossils of similar species are known from Wyoming. The Secretarybird is a powerful, long-legged terrestrial hunter particularly well known for killing snakes by stamping them to death but also perfectly happy to consume other animal prey.

In my earlier post "Children and Heart Disease" available here , I noted that, in the seventh and final edition of Dr. Spock's Baby and Child Care: A Handbook for Parents of the Developing Child from Birth to Adolescence , Dr. Benjamin Spock no longer recommends feeding animal products to children after two years of age. The answer is "Yes."
