This, 2022, has been a curious year for books about birds and birding. Despite the absence of two major publishers—Lynx and HMH–from the new title publishing scene (hopefully not permanently), we were happily surprised to read and peruse many excellent books. But this is more than a coffee table book. Highly recommended.

Two epigraphs open Bernd Heinrich’s White Feathers: The Nesting Lives of Swallows, each so redolent of his work as a whole, not just this new book, that they deserve to be quoted, even in a mere review, in full. Here’s the question in this book: Tree swallows build their nests in tree cavities or manmade boxes.

And it gently tells the story of why we shouldn't eat factory farmed animals. Because if there's one of those places, can we eat those animals?"

The NYC owls have little to do with the book in front of me except that it too is about birds and people. The 26 essays in When Birds Are Near are all about the real-life and emotional spaces where people overlap with birds. Yes, there are scores of photos on Twitter accompanied by the expected exclamation points and emojis.

The single greatest challenge facing any book of science writing is balance. However, they do emphasize strongly that like humans, the large corvids are animals who rely on being adaptable, curious, and social for their survival, and that this gives them a commonality with us despite our very real differences.

A handful Animal Person readers since May of 2006, when I started this then-daily blog, have asked me if I've read Joan Dunayer. And now that I've read Animal Equality and begun Speciesism , I think I know why. Dunayer devotes a chapter each to the language used in hunting, zoos, "marine parks," vivisection and "animal agriculture."
