Our little adventure now moves us farther north, into Idaho’s Teton Valley area, and a visit to Jackson, Wyoming. As we get a little farther north, my target list for bird species has diminished a bit, as there are a lot of repeats, and not many new bird opportunities. And here is the same Swainson’s Hawk, in the dark phase.

This, 2022, has been a curious year for books about birds and birding. What extraordinary birds penguins are: physically, they remind us of ourselves, so we think we understand their behaviors, but, as the authors say, “their private life is as complex and mysterious as that of any wild animal.” Highly recommended.

A federal government decision to allow a Wyoming tribe to kill two bald eagles for a religious ceremony is a victory for American Indian sovereignty as well as for long-suppressed religious freedoms, the tribe says. The Northern Arapaho share the Wind River Indian Reservation in central Wyoming with the Eastern Shoshone Tribe.

When the South Dakota ferret numbers began dropping, they captured nine animals in hopes of starting a captive breeding population. All the wild ferrets by 1974, and all the kits born to the nine captives, and finally the last of the captive animals in 1979. Then, in Meeteese, Wyoming, the Hogg family’s ranch dog Shep found something.

Last week we were in the Teton Valley, getting ready to head over to Wyoming, and Yellowstone National Park. As it turns out, many of those very birds that I had hoped to find, all had the same idea, and had moved out of the park as well. I would have to say the most common bird in the park, must be the Common Raven.
