Animals for research purposes are coming from municipal shelters, breeders and the greyhound trade. Unwanted farm dogs are another source. In 2007, 394 dogs died during procedures for canine and human research. RSPCA state president Dr Hugh Wirth slammed municipal pounds for being involved in the research trade.

The veterinary services department launched a probe this month after animal rights campaigners accused the Progenix Research lab based in the northern state of Penang of cruelty to animals. The lab, which is run by the Britain-based Alpha Biologics, uses monkeys, dogs, rodents and rabbits for toxicology testing.
