I’ve been thinking about petrels a lot since last week’s post, probably because I am planning a trip to the Otago Peninsula soon which should get me a whole raft of petrels and penguins. Buller’s Albatross ( Thalassarche bulleri ) and Cape Petrel ( Daption capense ) at Kaikoura. This post is not about albatrosses!

Here one is close to the scenically impressive Cape of Good Hope National Park as well as the Boulder’s Coastal Park, home to hundreds of breeding African Penguins. Here and there the occasional Cape Gannet can be seen plunge-diving in the distance, while Kelp Gulls in loose groups fly past on their way out to the trawling grounds.

Spotted Shags are a possibility, and one time I even saw a Little Penguin swimming around right next to the waterfront along which hundreds of people were walking towards the main stadium (it was a few hours away from a World Cup match between South Africa and Australia). But many species are also capable divers.

I particularly like the albatrosses and owls, shrikes and boubous. Perhaps birds of prey are somewhat overcrowded, but still well organised. Some plates are replaced entirely, e.g. the excellent seabirds, newly painted by Faansie Peacock (a name to remember).

Our next stops were at Portobello, for the Royal Albatross Center, and the Blue Penguin beach. The first night we got to watch nearly 20 Little Blue Penguins waddle ashore, as well as a whole bunch of the huge Northern Royal Albatross’s circle overhead. Here are a couple of those Blue Penguins.

Australian Pied Shags and the endemic Spotted Shag also fish the calm waters by the city, and if you are lucky you can see Blue Penguins as well. I saw a few more albatrosses at a distance on the trip, along with some Buller’s Shearwaters, but it was such a calm day that there wasn’t much flying about. A pretty good find!
