Birds of the Northern Forest – An homage

10,000 Birds

Ever since I was a kid I wanted to learn how to draw, but alas I never made it past the stickman. It seemed to draw you in and I could easily imagine standing beside him, staring as he did at the bird, watching it curve its neck downwards. The title read “Birds of the Northern Forest”, paintings by J.F. tridactylus).

Birding Nonggang, Guangxi, China – part 2

10,000 Birds

This is the second part of a post showing some birds seen at Nonggang in December 2022, along with the usual (mostly irrelevant) comments. Even the Latin species name soror (“sister”) indicates the similarity to another pitta species (blue-naped). Sir James McGrigor (1771-1858) Director Gen.

Seeds

10,000 Birds

It was only a few years later when I discovered birding. Eventually, I discovered the joy of putting these two pastimes together, by making gardens that are attractive to birds. But there are almost no ways to buy bird-friendly native plants down here in Mexico, so I’m still doing it on the cheap. But I want more!

Rancho Naturalista Lodge, Costa Rica, or in the Land of Coffee and Chocolate

10,000 Birds

On that glorious day, I observed ten critically endangered birds, representing 8% of their Costa Rican, or 2% of their global population!! In my previous post , I dealt with Rancho Naturalista Lodge itself and birding within their private reserve. But, let’s start at the beginning.
