Only in Africa is it really easy to see a big variety. Lion – much easier to see than an Aardvark In contrast to East Africa, encounters with mammals while out birding in Europe are relatively few. Keeping fox numbers down certainly benefits our local ground-nesting birds, especially Stone Curlews and Grey Partridges.)

The Abyssinian Empire was the only African nation to survive what is now known as the Scramble for Africa, and was never colonized (it did endure 6 brutal years under Fascist Italian occupation).

Perhaps the most well known mosquito born disease, heartworms can be fatal to dogs and occasionally cats and foxes. The virus originated in Africa, around the Nile region and has only threatened the United States in recent years. Heartworms. West Nile Virus. The virus traveled across continents because it easily infects birds.

It really puzzles me, why they go all the way across the Sahara and Eastern Africa to overwinter as far as Madagascar, instead of staying somewhere closer, in continental Africa? Madagascar must have separated from Africa long before they evolved. How old are they as a species? But the day isn’t over yet.
