The remaining amount of water was really quite disastrous for the local bird-life. Of course the water will have been evaporating daily, but it was more than appreciated by the local bird-life. As we pulled up to walk into the quarry we were being watched by hundreds of birds. Every bird in the area of the quarry took off.

So when there is no Lake Cuitzeo on which to winter, where do all these birds go? Our 2020 drought taught me that any body of water, no matter how small, might host these “drought refugees” in dry years. There were plenty of other birds in the area, with 72 species around the reservoir for the day.

On the northern birding calendar, October is a time for sparrows, cool weather, and tired fall leaves. In Costa Rica, the tenth month is when birds pass through in droves. but there are other birds, many stopping to stay, many others moving to South America. In Costa Rica, a lot of those birds fly right overhead.

Mike complains of a dearth of birds in his BBOTW post for the last weekend of August and I am sure that many of us know exactly how he feels. “Birding Over Time” compares the number of species recorded over a month with that month from previous years. Those checklists contained 623 birds and brought the year list to 1676.

They submitted 124 checklists for 671 species of bird. 646 Cattle Egret – Bubulcus ibis. Included in the numbers are 2 new life-listers; a Long-tailed Koel from Duncan and a White-throated Rock-Thrush from Kai.

And yet, less than halfway through our 2020-2021 winter dry season, Lake Cuitzeo had essentially dried up. I am sure this means millions of individual birds were displaced by this drought event. I soon encountered many of the local birds that I have become very familiar with over recent weeks. When I returned to the small dam where there had been so many Australian Wood Ducks earlier in the day I discovered that the eleven cows had been joined by two Cattle Egrets. The two most prolific contributors, Pat and Tom, have been sharing their birding space in Costa Rica. The beats have now contributed more checklists than birds. During October, 7 countries (Costa Rica, Australia, USA, India, Hong Kong, UK, Serbia) were birded by 11 beats who shared 135 checklists and noted 697 species.
