Top ten birds for 2016

Barnacle Goose is my choice for the next bird, because we discovered one lone bird among all of the hundreds of Canada Geese , Greylag Geese and Eurasian Wigeon at Freiston Shore and it was as if it was a test to see if we would notice “the odd one out”! Canada Geese , Greylag Geese and Eurasian Wigeon.

The Goal – 200 by 2016

I had planned to reach that goal by the end of 2016, accounting not only for the impressive potential of the county, but also for the fact that birding with two young children at home is not the easiest thing in the world. In the darkening evening and rain, I found the goose among a flock of golf course Canada Geese.

Best Bird of the Weekend (First of February 2016)

I got my owl fix last weekend but spent the bulk of the week chasing a rare pair of Greater White-fronted Geese around Monroe County. Fortunately, I finally tracked them down yesterday, hiding out amidst teeming masses of Canada Geese. Did you see any superb owls?

Best Bird of the Weekend (First of 2016)

For the first week of the year Corey has enjoyed catching up to some of New York’s visiting rare geese and making their acquaintance in 2017. With frigid temperatures taking all the fun out of bird chasing, I enjoyed my plentiful yard birds, especially a confiding Tufted Titmouse , which looked smashing in the wan sunlight.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Last of February 2016)

I couldn’t quite turn a runt among Canada Geese at Genessee Valley Park into a Cackling , so my best bird had to be a flyover Sharp-shinned Hawk. Erratic weather patterns signal flux. These are the days when birds of one season overlap with those of another. Cherish them!

New Year’s Day Birding at San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary

On New Year’s Day 2016, our last day in California before heading back to New York, I was pleased for the chance to get out for a few hours in the morning to jump start the year list. The goose flies out early with a flock of Canada Geese so if you want to see it get there at or shortly after dawn!

Spurn National Nature Reserve

In October 2016 everybody was receiving messages on their mobile phones and also of interest were some people that did not own a telescope or binoculars and just photographed every bird with a massive camera even larger and heavier than many of the telescopes!
