The standout was the Cape Barren Goose , which not only has an awesome name but is also thought to be the last survivor of a lineage of geese that used to forage the grasslands of Antarctica before the whole place got all icy. I saw a number of cool birds on two seperate and short trips to Melbourne this year.

It is only during particularly wet seasons that Magpie Geese come to Broome and already they have started to arrive. Magpie Geese enjoying the flooded plains. Christmas Day 2016 rain “stopped play” even earlier and we only got 74 bird species, but the following year on Christmas Day we got 119 species around Broome.

Here is her description of migrating Snow Geese: I’d seen snow geese at great distances offshore or far overhead, but here they are passing me by, low on the water, where the wind speed is lessened. Ahead on the water, I see roughly 200 tired snow geese settled together in a single, densely packed group. by Caroline Fox.

The Lesser White-fronted Goose is not only rare in Serbia, but also overlooked among numerous Greater White-fronted Geese. There are 29 species listed as Extinct in 2016 for which the year of extinction is estimated as 1940 or later. point to just one problem source, one over-abundant and highly invasive species – Homo sapiens.

This all started way back in 2012 and several of us continued on in 2013 , 2014 , 2015 and 2016. The ephemeral lakes are finally filling up after completely drying out and the arrival of hundreds of Magpie Geese rather than a dozen or so is a welcome surprise.

The pair of Ross’s Geese that were found earlier in the week at Robert Moses State Park on Long Island cooperated nicely, placidly feeding in the lawn in the traffic circle while Corey digiscoped them from his car. Not exactly geese-a-laying but close enough for the holiday season! How about you?

There are still Magpie Geese about, but the long vegetation can make it hard to see them sometimes. There was a lone Black-tailed Native-hen in town in 2016 at the Sports Oval, so they don’t always travel in flocks! Alongside the Black Kites and Whistling Kites we observed a Brown Falcon and a soaring Black Breasted Buzzard.
