I’d only ever had two encounters with Tundra Swans in Queens, one in November of 2006 and a flock of thirty-three, believed to have been forced down by a storm, in November of 2014. I was psyched to see the one that had been reported but first I had to do some other birding on Sunday morning to keep my year list moving along.

The winter of 2014 is quite warm and the numbers are much lower, but the Opovo record, as counted by Vuckovic, is 250 owls. Numerous Mute Swans , Greylag Geese among them, together with Mallard , Gadwalls , Eurasian Wigeons , Eurasian Teals – practically the full hand of dabbling ducks at this lake.

There are Australasian Grebes, Wandering Whistling-Ducks, Pacific Black Ducks and Little Black Cormorants present and also Magpie Geese. Magpie Geese are not always present in the Broome area, but this year good numbers came and they also bred in this area to the south of Broome.

This all started way back in 2012 and several of us continued on in 2013 , 2014 , 2015 and 2016. The ephemeral lakes are finally filling up after completely drying out and the arrival of hundreds of Magpie Geese rather than a dozen or so is a welcome surprise.
