New York City Park Department Contractor Tears Up Imperiled Sparrows Home

A New York City Parks Department contractor just wiped out a breeding population of sparrows in tons of trouble already, on land owned by the parks department that was supposed to be protected as “Forever Wild.” Here’s a short video of the damage. Any destruction like this of a wetland would be bad, of course.

Their mortality was huge, but I realised how huge only when we did the December 2012 census to find only 1300 PCs. Four fifths were gone!

Pied Oystercatcher breeding update

There was only one that survived to fledge in 2010, two in 2011 and two in 2012. One of the surviving Pied Oystercatcher chicks in 2012 made itself famous right here. The Pied Oystercatcher adult sat down as the chick approached and it climbed up towards it and was subsequently pushed under the right wing into the shade.

While the environmental disaster was unfolding in New Jersey, New York beaches seemed free of the plants but that all changed in October 2012. Right now the infestations seem small enough that with a concerted effort they could be eradicated from New York beaches. There are both male and female spikes.
