The 2012 event was held at Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge. The conference timed nicely with sparrow migration and everyone was anxious to get views of reported Nelson’s Sparrows that were obligingly hanging out in some mud along a beaver pond. Have we all gone completely mental?

Looking through this compact yet extensive guide, I realized that I have been amiss in not reviewing the first book of this series, the Peterson Field Guide to Moths of Northeastern North America by David Beadle and Seabrooke Leckie (same authors, order reversed), published in 2012. According to Corey Finger (author of the soon-to-be-published ABA Field Guide to Birds of New York , and we’re all very excited about it), selection of species is one of the more challenging parts of writing an ABA field guide and I was happy to see my favorite Pennsylvania bird, Henslow’s Sparrow amongst the 15 sparrow species covered here.

Species order follows the AOU Checklist of North American Birds up to the 2015 supplement (so warblers come before sparrows), with a variation– certain subspecies are treated as full species (Eurasian Teal, Western Willet, Audubon’s Warblers, Red Fox Sparrow, and more). . Which is true. And for good reason.

Say’s Phoebe – A self-found rarity at Edgemere while accompanied by my family made my day back on 05 October 2014. Golden Eagle – Two weeks to the day after the Say’s Phoebe I was once again at Edgemere with my family and picked up a Golden Eagle flying past , a surprise bird for sure!
