My Year in Birding 2012

I had some goals for this year as well, goals which I laid out in the introduction to my 2012 year list. I came up just short of reaching 1,100 Birds on my overall World Life List , clocking in at 1,096, not a bad increase of 48 from the beginning of 2012 when I started at 1,048. January 2012 started off with a bang.

On this final day of 2012 it is time, just like it was on the final days of 2010 and 2011 , to share your Best Birds of the Year. Here, without further ado, are your Best Birds of 2012, in no particular order. I think my official Best Bird of 2012, though, was (finally, finally seeing) the Burrowing Owl.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Fourth Weekend of 2012)

Plus, the time was finally right for me to savor a local slice of that southern Snowy Owl invasion. That magnificent predator was too distant for decent photos, so I snapped some of the Long-tailed Ducks on which the owl has been sustaining itself… As for Corey, his Space Coast experience is yielding ABA birds and lifers in buckets.

Harlequin Duck - 01 January 2012 – A great way to start the year at Fort Tilden, and it made up for missing several the previous winter. Snowy Owl - 04 February 2012 – A bird that was long overdue and one that I had predicted on my previous list but not on the most recent.

Only Nine Days Until the Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival!

10,000 Birds

Herons and raptors and rails and gulls and ducks and cranes and jays and owls and alligators are all awaiting me – and you – at the Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival. Blue-winged Teal like these at Meritt Island National Wildlife Refuge in 2012 certainly count as good birds. Black Rails failed me in 2012.

Reviewing 2011 – My Year in Birds

I begin 2012 with 284 birds on my Queens Life List , 478 birds on my ABA Life List , and 1,048 birds on my World Life List. Tufted Duck in Cold Spring Harbor. The number one bird of the year for me for 2011 is the Burrowing Owl. Because, well, owl! Will 2012 be as kind a year to me as 2011? And burrowing!
