When I first used to write for this website way back in 2010 we had Crested Pigeons in our garden on a daily basis. Our weather is starting to change and the Torresian Crows that have been silly enough to raise Channel-billed Cuckoos over recent months are now free of their responsibilities. Over the winter, the universe lost four whooping cranes to what appears to be recreational shooting: three gunned down together in Georgia on December 30, 2010, and another in Alabama on January 28, 2011. It may be as sick as deliberately targeting an endangered species for death. Speculation is useless in acts of vandalism.

One North American species I am very familiar with is the Cassin’s Auklet , which ranges from the end of the Aleutian Islands to California. Unless you spend much time on their breeding islands it is probably not one of the better known species of alcid, it is small and nondescript even as auks go. So why do it?

Hunting sandhill cranes in Kentucky is a bad idea from a public relations standpoint, considering the growing cadre of birders and nature enthusiasts for whom cranes are a touchstone species. Initiating a hunting season on a large, charismatic species like a crane is no way to resuscitate hunting.
