It also is home to the breeding sites of vulnerable seabirds including the Cook’s Petrel and Black Petrel, both species are considered vulnerable. Black Petrels ( Procellaria parkinsoni ) only breed on two islands, of which Little Barrier is one. The species was lost for over a hundred years before being rediscovered in 2003.

I learned of the trip right as it had been delayed and made a vow that I would be on that ship. South Africa is their steward and have been declared Special Nature Reserves under the South African Environmental Management: Protected Areas Act in 2003, which restricts activities on the islands to research and conservation management.

The boat Captain got us right in close. Re-introduction of the Red Kites in southern Scotland was started in 2003 with 40 birds released, for the most part in secret. What started as a small group of birds, with the hope they would make it on their own, is now a very strong breeding population.
