A few more Pied Oystercatchers start to breed

We know Pied Oystercatchers have used the area since 2000 and most likely for many years before that. They were successful last year at raising one of the chicks, which is a rare event in Broome. The rocky outcrop changes slightly each year as the sand moves around with the wind.

At the speed the team was moving, I could barely raise my bins before everyone was back in the van. 1/4000sec @ ISO 2000 Long-tailed Duck was the “star” of the Galveston FeatherFest , and a write-in for the Great Texas Birding Classic. 1/2500 sec @ ISO 2000 a. We found it at the jetty next to the Bolivar Ferry landing.

Pied Oystercatcher breeding season starts early!

Traditionally since 2000 we have encountered our first Pied Oystercatcher eggs in the first week of July, but this year one pair have decided to start laying eggs early! Sadly we don’t expect them to successfully raise chicks this early in the season, but you never know! Pied Oystercatcher tracks in the dunes.

Pied Oystercatcher chicks four weeks on….

We continue to have egg predation at many of the nest sites and chick loss, but one pair of Pied Oystercatchers is being successful in raising two chicks so far. There has never been two eggs hatch and two chicks survive for more than about ten days since we started to keep an eye on them in 2000.

The Brown Teal

Unlike the situation in Mallards the males of the Brown Teal will remain with the female after laying to guard the breeding territory and even helping raise the ducklings once they have hatched. They are also highly territorial, and will aggressively chase off other members of their species as well as other species of ducks.

Telia watches him in half-amusement, then raises and gives a low, bull-like roar, provoking the lapwings to an excited screech, makes a few steps and lies down.
