It’s a real shame, though, because these battlefields can be a real haven for wildlife and are often located in parts of the country that don’t otherwise have a lot of preserved land. Before the counts, I was hoping to break 100 species, but after 21 parks reported data back to me we’re up to 183 species!

Among other things, it has provided some of the earliest and most compelling evidence for global warming. But good phenology is hard.

But I don’t agree with the supplemental feeding that happens with feral cats–if you’re gonna call them wildlife, treat them as such. And if a feral cat colony is near an endangered species, the colony should be eliminated. We see several different types of species.

Things started on a promising note, with Mountain Bluebirds and the pale local race of Song Sparrow both evident in the visitor center parking lot. To my disappointment the biggest and most visible species I saw was the introduced Common (Ring-necked) Pheasant , and my first lifer was the equally introduced Gray Partridge.
