The Species per Square Mile Approach. While Colombia may have almost 2000 bird species, it is a huge country with, still, complicated long-distance travel logistics. On the other hand, small countries with relatively long bird lists offer higher species densities per square mile. And why 1000?

Seychelles’ small landmass combined with geographic isolation results in few species. The book ends with further reading suggestions, list of useful websites, and the index of both English and scientific names. That antiquity produces a high level of endemism, e.g. 19% of 62 breeding birds are endemic to the islands!

Orange-winged Parrots may be abundant elsewhere, but here their presence is wholly overshadowed by a tremendous mixed flock of Crested Oropendola and Yellow-rumped Cacique. One step away from swifts are hummingbirds, and at least 13 species of these winged jewels flutter about from sunrise to sunset. Interesting.

The guide Tony was very professional, knew the area, the plants, reptiles, and without a doubt, the birds. This held true of most species. The final numbers for the Darwin area are as follows: Darwin species: 51 New Birds. Australia Species: 224 Species. The Little Big Year: 488.

1,712 species, 12% of which are endemics. News flash–I just received the trip report from Carlos, and the tally is 419 species recorded, of which 16 were heard only; plus Ian and I saw an additional species before the tour started, courtesy of Paulo Boute. Oh my gosh! I shouldn’t have been surprised. Any suggestions?

With that logic those trees, if left to grow, should produce something of use to at least one or two species of birds. A Yellow-crowned Parrot digs in. The first sign of any positive effect was the appearance of several species of butterflies I hadn’t previously noticed. Of course, various species of bats as well.

The hollowed-out bones connected to the lungs for respiration that we see today as a key bird adaptation to the aerobically challenging behavior of flight existed in many dinosaurs that were as far way from being bird-like as, well, as a T-rex is from being your pet parrot.
