While preparing an article this week for a local newspaper on the nighttime denizens of Tobago, it crossed my mind that I never considered owls as a group, far less target species for any particular outing (except for a select few, upon which I shall expound here). involve owls. Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl.

Yet Another New Backyard

This time, we are back in Trinidad and have relocated to a picturesque lodge in the very heart of the island. Even having a conversation at night can prove difficult, as we are often interrupted by the wail of a Common Potoo , or the intermittent hooting of a Tropical Screech-Owl.

Last CBC of the Decade

For the fifth year in a row, I was assigned the prolific and well-known Aripo Livestock Station at the foothills of Trinidad’s Northern Range. Likely a Tropical Screech-Owl , but nothing definitive. A Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl that was fervently vocalizing however, was the first for the list. It did not go on the list.

Creepers in the Forest

But this book taught me about eagles, owls, storks and herons. Turns out that the Streak-headed Woodcreeper was a formerly uncommon resident of Trinidad, its range gradually increasing to cover semi-degraded and altered habitat. Four of those are resident on Trinidad, and one is found only on Tobago. Plain-brown Woodcreeper.

On Trinidad, the banks of the largest rivers are never more than a stone’s throw apart. Go owling, naturally! We took a short walk that only turned up a single species – but an incredible owl nonetheless. Tawny-bellied Screech-Owl With a full belly and sleep beginning to knock on my door, we called it a night.

It had been some months since we had been in the hills of Trinidad’s Northern Range, and let it be known that all forests are very different. A pair of Ferruginous Pygmy-Owls called to each other, driving the passerine population into a panic. The tiny terror, a rather annoyed Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl.

When it Rains

As far as resident birds go within Trinidad & Tobago, the Grey-throated Leaftosser is one of the more difficult birds to get a view of. I’m grateful for the relative plethora of opportunities with this secretive species – and hoping that I’ll have the same fortune with my most recent lifer – Striped Owl.
