However – and I am not saying this out of misplaced national pride – there is one bird in the Netherlands that proves Jefferson wrong and Buffon right: the White-tailed Eagle (or Sea Eagle ). My hotel was right on the A6 motorway and despite the strange location it is undoubtedly the best hotel for the Oostvaardersplassen.

Birding on Texel in Late October

Although not as exciting as Helgoland, which I covered here recently , Texel is an excellent location in its own right. However, I was rewarded with two Red-throated Divers feeding right at the beach, and a probable but too brief Black-throated Diver further out at sea.

The grand idea behind the Eurobirdwatch is to get as many people as possible exposed to birds and birding (or, to the virus of birding) – at the time when smaller birds are already gone, and the bigger ones haven’t arrived yet!

The European Christmas Bird Count

Two hundred yards further, the first Common Goldeneye and Smew started to appear and, while counting Smew and geese, a Great Bittern took flight from one stand of reeds to another, right in front of us. And this one chose to fly right in front of us. It is not an uncommon bird, but being so secretive, I see it only every other year.

Scientists at Eindhoven University in the Netherlands have grown in-vitro meat, using cells from a live pig to replicate growth in a petri dish. They come from the same source right? From an opinion piece in the Times of India. They haven't been able to actually taste the pork they've grown because of lab rules.
