Although not as exciting as Helgoland, which I covered here recently , Texel is an excellent location in its own right. I’m was very happy with this sighting, but noticed that these birds never seem to be males in their attractive non-breeding plumage, the main image you recall from the bird guides.

Two hundred yards further, the first Common Goldeneye and Smew started to appear and, while counting Smew and geese, a Great Bittern took flight from one stand of reeds to another, right in front of us. These globally threatened raptors breed from Ukraine eastward through Siberia and only a few come to overwinter here.

This timing suites Britain and Netherlands well, I suppose, but Europe is somewhat larger than that.). The grand idea behind the Eurobirdwatch is to get as many people as possible exposed to birds and birding (or, to the virus of birding) – at the time when smaller birds are already gone, and the bigger ones haven’t arrived yet! Luca recently completed his BSc in the Netherlands and currently spends his time working (and birding!) Stepping off the ferry upon arrival on the island, I was welcomed by nearly 20 Northern Wheatears that crowded the pavement right in front of the boat. before starting his MSc.

I also got to spend a few hours in the Netherlands. Lesser Spotted Eagles breed regularly with around 100 pairs in Germany, but unless you know where the territories are you are unlikely to see them. Marsh Sandpiper , Den Oever, Netherlands. Lesser Spotted Eagle , Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany.
