Still, I did manage to see a decent 65 species in 6 hours, and many of them stayed quite close to me, allowing for some nice photos. It looks frustratingly similar to the Rufous-crowned Sparrow of the western United States and Mexico, but is much larger and has a heavier bill. I am always down for the day when I get home.

As I approached the eastern lake, the now-dirt road passed through dense mesquite forest, of a kind more often seen in northen Mexico than down here in the south. Which is exactly why, on my first stop, I found myself surrounded by a species that, in theory, should have not been there.

Even so, in the short term, it can be hard to accept that hundreds of species are close to being extinguished from this irreplaceble tapestry of life, that hundreds more are headed for the same eventual abysmal stop. We would see how species that used to be common, even abundant, became remnants of their former, robust populations.

And with it the existence of the northernmost species of parrot in the world, the only native parrot in the United States whose provenance is not questioned, and a piece of American natural history that is so bizarre that its existence seems impossible to people living today. Maybe a pet macaw or similar bird….but While it is not impossible for this to be a wild bird, especially given the strong north winds we have been having, this bird is commonly found in the somewhat unregulated bird trade in Mexico. This amazing spectacle of color came from just above my head, and I truly had no idea what it was.

And while this poisonous species is usually red and spotted, older examples can lose their spots and take on an orange hue. ” These guys would have let me pet them, had I been so inclined. (As It was not until I got home that I discovered my first orange mushrooms were edible, and highly prized.
