Maybe a pet macaw or similar bird….but While it is not impossible for this to be a wild bird, especially given the strong north winds we have been having, this bird is commonly found in the somewhat unregulated bird trade in Mexico. This amazing spectacle of color came from just above my head, and I truly had no idea what it was.

Mexico is notorious for its bullfights and lack of animal rights. Senators from the opposition Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, are working on legislation to ban bullfights and guarantee animal rights in Mexico, a lawmaker said. I'm very, very surprised. And not very optimistic. But, still, I can't dismiss it.

Threats to the Great Green Macaw include habitat destruction (especially any cutting of Dipteryx trees used by macaws for nesting and food) and capture for the pet bird trade. Great Greens may be doing alright in Costa Rica but in many other parts of their range, surveys indicate another story. Guanacaste Hummingbird (Amazilia alfaroensis).

Italian Wall Lizard at the Queens Botanical Garden (click for a bigger version) The Italian Wall Lizard , also known as the Ruin Lizard was introduced to Nassau County, New York City’s eastern neighbor, in 1967, most likely from an accidental pet escape, and made its way west into Queens relatively rapidly.
