The commonest large mammals of the park are smallish, spotted forest deer – Chitals, and we often encounter small herds.

The Whistling Ducks of Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge

Encompassing over 30,000 acres, the refuge protects birds of course, but also butterflies, mammals, and more. My husband and I zipped up windbreakers and pulled down hats to stay warm as we traversed the raised path, watching Common Gallinules, White-Faced Ibis, and American Coots probe for food along the exposed mud.

Hide at Mankwe Dam

It is built to reach out into the water when the dam is full and is reached along a raised walkway, screened from the mammals, reptiles and birds that may be roosting, resting, feeding, drinking or waiting in ambush close by. Mammals visit the dam as well as the birds. All this was seen before I even stepped into the hide.

A morning in a Kalahari Leopard’s life

You can notice in the above images how the Leopard uses her eye-lids as hoods to protect her sensitive eyes from the bright sun as she sprinted towards us. Sitting down, she raised this leg and pulled them out using her teeth, after a few more paces, she then raised her front right leg and pulled out another thorn!

The Geladas of Ethiopia
