The real upside is that it is right by my house and the Tawny Owls occasionally stray into my oak tree at night. All terrain vehicle enthusiasts ripped swathes through the wild flowers and fireraisers left the burnt out shuck of a car, so there will almost certainly be work parties to clear the litter and debris. Feeder stations!

Now, although I have seen this species several times before, we have a unique relationship. Discerning both species is relatively straightforward if they are seen together, if the observer concentrates enough on feeding pattern. We had shared our porch with a bold Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl the night before, so the expectation was there.

Passing through the high oak dominated rainforests of Quetzal National Park, this road can also turn up Unspotted Saw-whet Owls and other species of the night but is much more birdy during the day. However, given the flocks of Barred Parakeets and many other birds that live in forests, you really should be birding.

Some don’t work as well as I would like, and others turn out to be birding gold mines, but no matter which species show, it’s always an adventure. For example, the leaf litter didn’t look as dry as other places, and I noticed a fair number of frogs, insects, and small lizards in the understory.

You had to make that resolution to go outside and trudge through the snow, brave those temps but the Great Gray Owl was worth it, those three Bohemian Waxwings lording over a flock of Cedars was priceless. For example, around here, we have to watch our step for vipers wonderfully camouflaged in the leaf litter. Promote birding.

Heading out of Ecclesdown Road on the second day of my trip, I had nailed all of my targets save four species ( Caribbean Dove , Yellow-billed Parrot , Jamaican Owl , and Stolid Flycatcher ). I told her that I had three target birds left to see, and she gestured at a tree near the guesthouse where three Jamaican Owls were roosting.
