Birding Honduras–The Cryptic Birds

That was the first thing we–our New Jersey Audubon group of 11 birders, led by Scott Barnes–noted as we exited the airport. Honduras was finally a reality. Excellent 10,000 Birds posts have been written about Pico Bonito and Honduras by Corey and Carlos , so I’m going to focus on some of my most memorable experiences.

Warblers that Warble

It has a high, thin warble, but I usually only hear its high, soft tsii call.The Golden-browed Warbler can be found from Mexico down to Honduras, and like the Red Warbler , its warble is rarely heard, while its buzzy tsssi call is quite common. I almost always see the Rufous-crowned Warbler in groups of two or three.

Birding Beyond Lake Yojoa and Panacam Lodge

The birding around Lago de Yojoa in Honduras is frankly phenomenal, as I learned during a June 2018 birding junket organized by the Instituto Hondureño de Turismo. But our adventurous group, led by Oliver Komar and Yobani A. The emerald put on an amazing show, buzzing right up to some of us and darting past others.
