A pair of Sarus Cranes , digiscoped at Baratphur, India. I was placed one year with a photograph of little egrets, taken at Kerkini in Greece, while the following year I won the class with a shot of Wryneck, photographed in an orchard in Poland ( above ). Perhaps it’s a basic human desire to dress things up.)

Out of my total of 15 observations ever, this is only the third within Serbia (the rest were half in India, the other half in Greece). This is an uncommon species here – only about a dozen birds overwinter in the country annually.

I live in the southeast of Europe, for a while lived in the south of Africa and also have extensively birded western and central India. India (1180 / 1171). Greece (346 / 411 – just to give you a clue, the Greek-published checklist I have has 449 species). Map by BirdLife International. Thailand (925 / 948). The Afrotropics.

I observed my first GS eagles in India some 8 years ago, then the first for Europe in Greece only last December , and finally I have them in my home country list. Still, this way or another, the year is ending with some glorious species, e.g. a rare Greater Spotted Eagle.
