The Cattle Egret is native to Africa, where it is a familiar sight among herds of large mammals. Unlike most herons, Cattle Egrets do not eat fish, although the occasional toad or frog has been noted. I’d like to introduce you to a diminutive heron, the Cattle Egret Bubuclus ibis. This species is primarily an insectivore.

So I put together a “carnival” (of sorts) of Feral Cat Ordinances and Issues that samples current events across the US. Free-roaming cats will hunt and kill birds, small mammals, reptiles, amphibians and fish, resulting in wildlife mortality. And it goes on and on, this is just a sampling.

There were no mammals, little game, and not many birds either. Gamebirds, such as turkeys, pheasants, partridges, quail, Mallards and the like were also brought, as were popular sport fish. Part of the world they wanted to transport was natural. The Eurasian Blackbird was not found in new Zealand before man, but it is now.

That for the latter nature went on without them, letting them observe, seems to be proved by the fact that there doesn’t seem to be a big difference in your chance of getting wounded by a small to medium forest mammal if you are hunting them or if you are gathering plant products. Or get your own. Not birds, though.

This fish hunting duck ranges from the northern tip of New Zealand to the sub-Antarctic Auckland Islands (after which it was first named) but is common nowhere. There aren’t many mammal ticks on this trip, but the ones you get are pretty remarkable. It certainly has no known relatives. Laughing Owl.
