This was only my second time ever to observe this subspecies (the first time was here as well), two other subspecies I have observed in India. Fish will lose their spawning ground, otters and White-tailed Eagles will be no more. They may have been disturbed by the presence of hunters in the Danube backwaters.

There’s an incoming car in my lane, and I am not in India! Pied Avocet by Boris Okanovic Next we find ourselves at the famous fish farm in the village of Sakule. Why should something so unimaginable in Germany be possible in Serbia? A mile later, there’s a traffic jam in front of us, where everyone stands still. Protest indeed!

Usually only several birds overwinter in Serbia – the biggest count ever was less than 10. I observed my first GS eagles in India some 8 years ago, then the first for Europe in Greece only last December , and finally I have them in my home country list.

The catch is, the station often pumps some small fish into the pool, hence the jolly bird party. The Dalmatian Pelicans line the lake shore, especially by the small beach opposite Limnochori village, where local fisherman tie their flat-bottomed boats and, after fishing – feed the birds with small fish, not worth taking to the market.

My best bird of the weekend was a Great Black-backed Gull , a rarity in a land-locked Serbia, with less than 10 observations so far. I bought my first 20 years ago from some Russian on the seashore in Greece, but have not used it much because of rather dark images (I even took it to India with me – and didn’t use it even once).

We are going to the Sakule fish farm in the namesake village north of Belgrade – the very best wetland birdscape in the area. The intensity of experience is not the same, but, e.g. focusing on a single bird and trying to solve the puzzle… or finding the rarest owl of India , that was a mind-blowing one. Common Cranes.

Our two newest contributors have shared from Mexico and China, bringing the countries birded this month (also including; Costa Rica, Greece, Serbia, USA, UK, India, UAE and New Zealand) to 10. Fish Crow – Corvus ossifragus. beats have still managed to share 82 checklists and accounted for 737 species. 01 Jun 2019.
