Dear Outdoor Cat Owners/Feral Cat Supporters, Does the photo above sicken you? I have been rescuing animals, both wild and domestic, since I was a child. I’ve rescued field mice to horses, and everything in between. I’m allergic to cats, but in my lifetime I’ve rescued five of them. It sickens me.

Rabbit Meadows is a rescue group out of Seattle. As the name suggests, they rescue rabbits, but they also rescue other small animals like ferrets, and other small rodents. She goes to the door, rejects the notion of going out, turns toward her dinner; goes back to the door, because clearly this human is not listening. If you pay attention you realize who likes whom, who's a loner, where the nests are, and that, for instance, Muscovy ducks like those above have routines and rituals that involve seeking, pleasure, sun bathing, lots of grooming, and if they have a certain personality, a desire to connect with those around them, including humans.

It was Los Angeles, after all, where mileage has no bearing on time, but where time was precious for my little rescue on this crystal morning. I’d been volunteering at rescues through my young adulthood, and I was training as a cat socializer, teaching terrified felines — the unlucky victims of cruel people — to trust humans again.
