As the rice paddies near Kota Kinabalu described in an earlier post , Tanjung Aru beach is not really a major birding spot in its own right. However, it is only a short taxi ride away from the airport where most travelers will arrive at – better to see birds instead of just eating fast food while waiting for a connecting flight.

We met Marilyn and Leonardo at a non-descript fast-food joint’s parking lot and within 10 minutes we were in Parque Nacional La Estanzuela. It must face the sun at the right time of day, the material needs to be good for excavating but not too soft to avoid collapsing tunnels, it needs to be steep, and the list goes on and on.

Higher up on the Balangshan pass, Yellow-billed Choughs (Alpine Chough) benefit from the local fast food available for sale there, along with the limited environmental consciousness of some of the tourists. The chicks do their usual thing of just being pesky and clamoring for food … … mostly successfully.

They wait for the winds to be right for a lake watch, sea watch, or hawk watch. Some folks who are really into listing figure out what birds they still need for their list that are still at least theoretically possible to see and come up with strategies to see them. They put themselves in the lines of hurricanes.

It's not just a question of animal rights. It's fast food and it is unhealthy. The more fattening food you eat, the more money goes to cancer research. However, I can hardly believe that they would actually partner with KFC (KFC!!!) for cancer research. Chickens that are used for KFC products are horribly treated.

And the highlight of our herpetological highlights was a Northern Watersnake that Mike stepped right over without noticing it sitting in a freshet. (In The long drive back to New York was filled by more lousy, incidental eBird checklists, more fast food, and more road kill. Also, Carlos is laughing at me right now …).
