The lady living on a farm by the Gaborone Dam said ‘I saw a croc taking an egret.’. The gentleman living on a farm by the Ngotwane Dam said ‘A croc took my dog, right there!’. Tree crowns were swaying, branches rocking; a troop of Vervet Monkeys ( Cercopithecus aethiops ) was on the move and we were reaching for our binoculars.

One such individual was Sir George Grey, who liberated many animals on his estate (mercifully on an island), including wildebeest, monkeys, zebras, wallabies, deer, cassowaries, emu and kookaburras. We don’t have monkeys, or wildebeest, or salmon here. It wasn’t long before some of these species started becoming problems.

Just look for the biggest, darkest green spot and that’s the farm, the last sizeable remnant of intact rainforest in the area. We would find out shortly after arriving at the farm but first we had to traverse muddy pastures with hedgerows where Red-eyed Vireos and Summer Tanagers fed. What still lived there? The damaged forest.

We began our journey in the famed Botanical Gardens in Georgetown, took our first taste of the land of many waters , poked around a friend’s farm , and at long last, began our journey into the wild green heart of the country. After what seemed like a lifetime of dreaming, we woke up for the first time in Guyanese interior.

Julie has seen or heard several on our farm here in southeast Ohio! For stones I used pieces of logs—something my friends in the tropics call a monkey bridge. My monkey bridge back across the boggy creek. .&# He even included this in his board member bio for the OOS website. But not me. The Connecticut Warbler is MY JINX BIRD.

Also this area was impacted by small towns and small farms that have setup along the access road. Upon our arrival in late afternoon we explored the nearby Red-capped Manakin Trail and saw a pair of Tawny-faced Quail and managed to photograph a hauler monkey, Spot-crowned Antvireo and a Black-headed Antthrush at dusk.
