There are the endemics, which are odd in their own way, and then there introduced species, which are so varied in their type and origin that you get the feeling you’ve arrived at the aftermath of a small zoo that escaped. What is surprising is quite how many species did end up here, and how economically unimportant they were.

Among 60 or so heron species in the world this is the only one using this peculiar fishing technique. The lady living on a farm by the Gaborone Dam said ‘I saw a croc taking an egret.’. The gentleman living on a farm by the Ngotwane Dam said ‘A croc took my dog, right there!’. Vervet Monkey c. Grey Heron 4.

Along that stretch, we enjoyed Fork-tailed Flycatchers and other species in the open fields and marshes including Harriss’s Hawk , the local Nicaraguan Seed-Finch , and, best of all, a pair of normally sneaky and secretive Yellow-breasted Crakes walking in the open through a grassy marsh! They weren’t joking.

We began our journey in the famed Botanical Gardens in Georgetown, took our first taste of the land of many waters , poked around a friend’s farm , and at long last, began our journey into the wild green heart of the country. It was a Black-headed Parrot , a species that I had meagrely attempted to see in Trinidad once without success.

Julie has seen or heard several on our farm here in southeast Ohio! I mumble the species’ name over and over something like this: that’s a *&$#^ Great Gray Owl! For stones I used pieces of logs—something my friends in the tropics call a monkey bridge. My monkey bridge back across the boggy creek.

Anyway, in case you are still reading, the main attraction at this hide is Lady Amherst’s Pheasant, which perversely is not featured in this post (it is treated in a separate one, thus grudgingly acknowledging the almost disgusting flamboyance of that species). This species tends to use plenty of hair gel to get the perfect wet look.
