We all have them: our favorite places to take friends and family when they visit, the bird-friendly areas we pop in on when we have the chance, the landscapes that entrance us. Wakulla holds such bird delights because it is completely protected. Moving means finding your new birding haunts. We opted for the 12:30 p.m.

Costa Rica is well known for national parks and other protected areas than offer access to tropical ecosystems dripping with biodiversity. However, as with many other places throughout the globe, this small country also has its fair share of urban wildlife. Lots of birds, a lot of really cool birds! Blackbirds.

Turkeys, 3 or 4 species of woodpeckers, all kinds of song birds grace our view constantly. Jochen the swallows have arrived at NYC at Jamaica Bay National Wildlife Refuge too. A perfect shot.

They were still listed as Endangered, but wildlife management measures taken in this park were clearly working. And unlike the protection of cormorants, which was perceived as a problem, protection of pelicans was welcomed by the local communities. The moat would protect the islets and allow the birds to start nesting earlier.

By 6am we had our first Australian Brush-Turkey as shown in the above photograph and the list was soon started. We saw several of the kingfisher family whilst on our trip, including Azure Kingfisher, Red-backed Kingfisher and Sacred Kingfisher. You soon adapt to the early mornings and early nights to coincide with the wildlife!

Many a birding trip starts with a longish drive from the airport to the first birding site with these common roadside birds being the first taste you get of a country’s wildlife, and I feel that many bird trip reports, interested mostly in mega-rarities, gloss over the amazing experience this first drive can give.
