Anyway, we arrived, spotted a Great Horned Owl in flight and waited and waited and waited. En route to our next stop we slowed down next to a park and spotted the now countable Egyptian Geese. Only one cuckoo?

In particular they evoke the New Hampshire lake my extended family descends upon each summer and has done so from before I was born. Southern White-faced Owl or African Scops Owl ? Common Loons , or Great Northern Divers, are one of those iconic birds that I remember vividly from days before being a birder. I still have no idea.

Of the Central Flyway states, Nebraska alone holds out in protecting the cranes, having proven by its longstanding Festival of the Cranes in Kearney that a crane is worth infinitely more alive and purring in the sky with its family than thudding, broken and bleeding, into a cornfield. Canada Geese and Crows can figure it out, so can Cranes.

Moved by an unseasonable bout of optimism, I went owl-chasing this weekend and actually encountered what has been a true nemesis bird for me: Northern Saw-whet Owl ! The Snow Geese at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge will soon be winging their way north, so he spent some quality time with them, his best birds of the weekend.

Tawny Owl , one of the first birds I remember seeing (at the age of five) Like most of us who watch birds, I enjoy listing. Several, like the mocker and the hummer, were members of families I hadn’t encountered before, either. For example, I saw my first wild Bean Geese in 1974, but were they rossicus or fabalis ? Fantastic!

There are exceptions: some full-frontal views, owl back views, and, strangely, a section on Kingfisher Behavior in which the kingfishers are facing left). Birds are arranged in taxonomic order, organized into sections based on families. But, always to the right. I did find an error in the introductory page for Orioles and Blackbirds.
