Here’s a quote about bird lungs from Britannica: “Himalayan geese have been observed not only to fly over human climbers struggling to reach the top of Mount Everest, but to honk as they do so.” Both falconers and wildlife rehabilitators have to study, gain experience, and jump through various hoops in order to get their licenses.

Some people do think the Northern Goshawk is undignified, at least compared to the falcons, as I learned while reading the excellent memoir H is for Hawk by Helen Macdonald. Instead, the name comes from the fact that in falconry, the Goshawk could be used for large prey – geese, yes, and also pheasants, hares, and cranes.

And not far from that scene was my personal highlight of the day, when my life Prairie Falcon swooped across the road, circled back, and came over the car only a few feet above my head, then perched with prey and let us all observe her clearly for several minutes. Travel onto the world famous Kaziranga National Park and you will have very good chances of more endangered species such as Pallas’s Fish Eagle , vultures, Swamp Francolin , and both species of Adjutant Storks. Commoner species include Bar-headed Geese , parakeets, shrikes, mynas and minivets.

In 1974, Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge was established to protect the delta and its diversity of fish and wildlife habitats. This cold weather and snow does not seem to have much effect on the huge number of ducks and geese, but the smaller song birds, all seem to wake up much later in the days, and only after it has warmed up a bit.

Pelicans and cormorants breeding at the Mikri often go to the Megali Prespa to fish the cold, deep waters – actually, cormorants to dive for fish and pelicans to wait for the cormorants at the surface to steal their prey. Greylag Geese. Hence, the smaller lake is frozen in winter, while the bigger one never freezes.
