An Ohio-based animal rights organization has filed a complaint against Harvard Medical School, alleging that the school's New England Primate Research Center in Southborough did not properly report its experiments on animals. Going back to that assumption that birds don’t have a sense of smell, it can be traced to John James Audubon (of course), who performed several experiments with Turkey Vultures and concluded that the vultures used sight, not scent, to find food. The Juncos reacted to alien scents, even temporarily reducing the time spent on the nest.

I particularly question the use of chimpanzees in medical research. The natural experiment must have been tried very infrequently, at least recently. From what I recall, chimpanzees share at least 95 percent of human DNA, although the number that floats around the most is 98.6 The following is from The Dragons of Eden by Carl Sagan.

Maple Farm Sanctuary is a charitable 501(c)3 organization that Cheri and Jim have made tremendous sacrifices to found. The sanctuary runs on a very modest budget of approximately $55,000 year.
