Birding the Dry Tortugas in late April has always been high on my bucket-list of the best birding experiences in North America. Had we visited during winter, the rainforest portion would almost certainly have yielded tons of warblers; winter residents include Kentucky , Blue-winged , and Golden-winged Warblers along with both waterthrushes. The trail also passes a number of lagoons reputed to be the best chance in Honduras for Anhinga.

” A Kentucky Warbler literally ran right next to me before diving under the boardwalk and disappearing into a thicket. This was the High Island Experience, I was told. Wood Thrush! A Hooded next to the Wood Thrush.” Well, he did pause for his photo-op, unlike his cousins. It was amazing.

Barbaro, the magnificent thoroughbred who broke his leg two weeks after winning the 2006 Kentucky Derby (I watched both races live), was put to death after taking a turn for the worse in his recovery. It's a sad day for horse lovers. See here for the New York Times story. Barbaro's killing is a case of euthanasia.
