I expected Arjan to describe more birding lodges in detail, but, if I remember well, only half a dozen or so were described in such a manner, the world-famous Kumul Lodge in the highlands of Papua New Guinea being among them. My Big Year is such a succession of new experiences that there is simply no time to think of other things.

Picathartes – Africa’s strangest birds

The family Picathartidae consists of two very unusual birds; White-necked or Yellow-headed Picathartes , endemic to the Upper Guinea forests of West Africa; and Gray-necked or Red-headed , restricted to Lower Guinea forests of Central Africa. They also occur in Liberia, Ivory Coast and Guinea.

Here's an article about an increase in animal experiments at Cardiff University in Wales. In four years it experimented on 157,839 mice, 17,324 rats, 11,096 fish, 1,941 birds, 1,253 guinea pigs, 933 pigeons, 884 frogs, 207 cats, 54 rabbits and 18 tree shrews from the tropics of south-east Asia.

There is a ton of debate as to how many species and subspecies there are within the taxon and I’m really unsure, seeing as I have no experience with them, as to which population the New Providence birds descend from.
