One of my most memorable outings was a night-time game drive in Kenya when we saw an aardvark and a zorilla, so we ticked off both the first mammal in the field guide’s index, and the last. It was an exciting experience, though a remarkably chilly one, as winters in Castile and León can be very cold.

After securing our passage, I patiently waited for this once-in-a-lifetime experience to a place we have never been and lacked any knowledge of, we were in for a complete surprise. We arose each morning at 4:30am to find out that we were late to the game. Regardless, we made it Marion and all else added to the experience.

And while the scientific species name kasumba sounds like some frightening new fitness trend or a dancing game performed on cruise ships, it is apparently just the Malay term for red. My cats refuse to even try Fiery Minivets. Trust me, the species name makes sense for the male, though not for the female. The dangers of being a geologist.

During the filming of this production, I got to experience “dirt hawking&#. Dirt hawking is a form of falconry that involves hunting rabbits and other small game with Harris Hawks (other hawk species also qualify). I have never been one to advocate the needless killing of animals for whatever purpose.

They are not necessarily the biggest African animals, but represented those that were considered a real hunter’s worthy prey or “game” – the African Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Black Rhinoceros, Leopard and king of the jungle, the Lion (which of course doesn’t inhabit jungle but savanna!). They live for up to 100 years.

However, Namibia’s colonial history began earlier, in 1884 when it was annexed by the Germans.
