I am still tired from the long drive, but it was great to play with the very best toys for birders, to be able to share experiences and to ask the factory staff all sorts of silly questions. At the end of the 20th century (and before the ELs were born), the factory hired consultants to help it restructure and maximise profits.

And a few years later, I read of her experience birding with me at one of the larger birding web sites and learned that E. I though her to be a silent type, perhaps tired of flying and jet lag, but it never ever occurred to me that my female guest may be worried when passing closed and abandoned communist era factories. I was nervous.

From the perspective of the land ethic, the immoral aspect of the factory farm has to do far less with the suffering and killing of nonhuman animals than with the monstrous transformation of living things from an organic to a mechanical mode of being. That immoral something is the transmogrification of organic to mechanical processes. (

Before the owls brought tourists, billboards along the main road proudly called the town “Kikinda – the Tile Capital”, after its tile factory, which is hardly a reason for any tourist to consider visiting the place. Today's New York Times gives us Adam Shriver's Op-Ed " Not Grass-Fed, But at Least Pain-Free ," which presents its dilemma at the end: If we cannot avoid factory farms altogether, the least we can do is eliminate the unpleasantness of pain in the animals that must live and die on them. It would be far better than doing nothing at all.

Given my west coast experience, I have made dedicated birding trips to several of the more predictable birding hotspots. I mention these trips because, along with other trips and experiences closer to home, they inform my research into my future birding travel. Geography is destiny. 188 for that location and thoroughly enjoyed myself.

Anyway, the story is not quite how I remembered it, to be honest, but fitting enough to describe the almost claustrophobic birding experience in ever-shrinking Nanhui. Fortunately, Tianmashan is probably too hilly to ever be turned into a Tesla factory or a technology park.
