The first looked very similar to a Mourning Dove , which of course can be found across the United States. It’s a strange experience looking up from a city street to gaze at birds native to South America; even more ironic considering humans drove the only native parrot/parakeet species, the Carolina Parakeet , to extinction.

The only thing that could have made the experience with Tryngites subruficollis better would have been some sunlight. Buff-breasted Sandpipers are hardy little birds, migrating yearly between their grassland wintering grounds in South America and their tundra breeding grounds in the high Arctic.

During our visit in mid-September, land bird migration from the United States and Canada was in full swing which added to the overall excitement of birding a site such as this one. Trips Central America cotinga Honduras Pico Bonito' Red-capped Manakin is a common bird along the forest trails at Pico Bonito.

Experiments in the field (the famed Asa Wright Nature Center veranda) involving Bananaquits and bananas came up with numbers ranging from 7 to 16, but a tanager always came along to interfere with Bananaquits’ noisy appreciation of their namesake fruit.
